Debbie shook her head when I told her what I just bought. This is Lei Gong, designed by phunk studio. Lei Gong is suppose to represent a myth told in Singapore to discipline the youths, the story goes something like this: ‘‘hey kid…if you do anything bad, Lei Gong will drop a bomb on your head, so don’t go there”. Something to this extent, it was kind of hard to decipher what the group was explaining cause you know they’re fobs. Anyways, best $60 I ever spent.

DJ Swayzee ripping it up at “Fridays Off The 405″at the Getty

Swayzee is bay Area’s latest high-tech export who mixes R&B and new wave into bumping earshot dance mixes. I only listened to him for a short while at the Getty event, but what I heard, I really enjoyed. I can’t remember the last time I heard music that made me wanna flicker.

The folks at QBN, creators of Newstoday and Krop Jobs, executed their first design lecture series at the Getty Center in Los Angeles. Held at Richard Meier’s posh auditorium this lecture featured a range of cross-media from illustrations to print work to the latest in new media. Featured speakers included phunk studio, Michael Mueller, Michael C. Place, Shepard Fairey, The Mill, Owens Brothers, and Joshua Davis. Reviewer, Tom Dolan best summed up the event, “If the AIGA is the designers’ dusty hall of fame, then QBN is the hip club in town”, and he was right. Guest speaker’s eye-candy intros were provided by Logan, the auditorium’s dim lights, and a smoking emcee gave the lecture an ambiance closer resembling that of a low key jazz event where a few of the transitions definitely felt improvised. All the speakers were amazing in their own respect, but if i was asked to choose the stand out it would be a one way tie between phunk studio the designery based out of singapore and Shepard Fairey (aka Mr. Obey). I’ll keep it short and sweet, if you wanna find out more about the speakers, yahoo it.

The group oozes talent, their earlier works showcased blew me away in regards to concepts and execution and the fact that they had little to no experience. yes, talent can only take you so far but these guys work their tails off. It was great to hear my favorite designery, the culture accent was killing the crowd.

Chances are you guys probably saw his work. Mr. Fairey is the ‘mastermind’ behind the ‘Obey’ campaign. Talk about passion, Shepard has been arrested a total of 13x during the course of his obey campaign and during one of those times was a victim of police brutality, ironically he was charged with a misdemeanor because the cop broke one of his knuckles in the process. Great speaker and interesting stories. When you get the chance look his story up.
